Welcome to the Bromeliad Society / Houston !
Our mission is to “increase the knowledge of bromeliads through interchange and dissemination of information.”
In other words, we want everyone to know and love bromeliads as much as we do and learn as much as you may desire about them!
Our monthly meetings are generally held on the third Tuesday of the month, 7:30 p.m. at the Hermann Park Garden Center by the rose garden. (EXCEPT in June and in December, we have a special holiday meeting/party and rare plant auction...not to be missed! Just remember to always check your bulletin for any meeting changes.) As a member, you will receive the monthly Bulletin prior to each meeting. A yearbook is published annually and is distributed after February of each year.
At each meeting we conduct the necessary brief business meeting of the society, followed by a Show and Tell. The Show and Tell portion of our meeting is educational. Members bring in their bromeliads not only to “show” them, but also to ask the experts about them. Perhaps there is a question about the particular name of the plant, or a question about better cultivation of that particular plant. We also have a section on cultural tips, ranging from type of soil to special growing conditions.
Another favorite part of our meeting is our break, where snacks and refreshments are served and a brief time for socializing and exchanges of ideas. It is also a great time to visit our raffle table, where plants and bromeliad related items (donated from our members) are placed. Proceeds from our raffle table are directed to our seedling fund. A seedling is given to each person in attendance each monthly meeting. The second part of our meeting is a guest presentation. We are fortunate to have experts from all over the world present programs.
In 2007 we will have a plant sale at the Houston Arboretum on Woodway in April, then a show and sale in May at Mercer Arboretum. A dinner/party/rare plant auction is held on a Saturday night in conjunction with our June show and sale. Our fall sale is tentatively for September, and our winter dinner/party/rare plant sale will be in December; details to be announced.
Within the pages of this website you will find some basic information on Bromeliads, but this is just the tip of the iceberg! By being a member of the Bromeliad Society/Houston, you will have immediate access to fellow growers and knowledgeable people who enjoy sharing their growing experiences with you. COME JOIN US!
